MUSEUM FOLKWANG IN GERMANY PRESENTS FIRST EUROPEAN SOLO EXHIBITION OF HOLLIS FRAMPTON’S STILL PHOTOGRAPHY

March 1, 2018Buffalo, NY—Dean Brownrout Modern/Contemporary is pleased to announce that, from April 13-May 13, 2018, Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany will present “Hollis Frampton ADSVMVS ABSVMVS, in memory of Hollis William Frampton, Sr., 1913–1980, abest,” featuring the photographic print work of Hollis Frampton.

This is the first solo exhibition of Frampton’s still photography in Europe.

ADSVMVS ABSVMVS, a series of fourteen color photographs depicting desiccated animals and plants, was created in 1982. The works, shown with accompanying text by Frampton, was, according to the artist, “a serious parody of a nineteenth-century scientific treatise of a certain kind.”

Hollis Frampton (1936-1984) is a pioneering filmmaker, writer, and photographer. His works are held in many important collections including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Harvard University, the Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Dean Brownrout Modern/Contemporary represents the photographic print work of Hollis Frampton.

The exhibition, curated by Anne Breimaier and Matthias Gründig, is presented in cooperation with Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen, and Free University Berlin. It will be accompanied by a catalog published for the Folkwang Edition book series.
